PhD Student

Project:

ths60@pitt.edu

Tate Shorthill earned a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Utah State University in May 2016 and decided to continue his education at Utah State by immediately jumping into a PhD program with Dr. Ban as his advisor. After finishing Tate’s first year, Dr. Ban accepted a position at the University of Pittsburgh. Tate, along with a few other students, were invited to join Dr. Ban’s new lab at Pitt. A year later, after completing a Master’s degree at Utah State, Tate joined back up with Dr. Ban.

Tate’s research areas include nuclear energy, heat transfer, and materials research. Tate claims that someday he would like to be involved with nuclear energy for space applications. But right now, he is happily researching nuclear safety by performing risk assessments of digital instrumentation and control systems. In his free time, Tate enjoys baseball, fly-fishing, and a bit of Star Trek for good measure.
